Copper line shutoff tracker

Phone companies have FCC filings to shut off copper phone lines in 43 states. Is yours next?

Copper lines, called POTS (plain old telephone service), still run the fire alarm, elevator phone, alarm system, fax and card reader in a lot of buildings. Look up your ZIP code to see what AT&T, Verizon, Frontier, CenturyLink and others have filed for your state.

What in your building still runs on a copper line?

Tick everything you have. Most businesses only find out what's on a line when it goes dead. Your check updates as you go.

Every FCC filing we track

80 FCC filings to shut off copper phone service

Each one is a Section 214 discontinuance the FCC published since 2025. The FCC approves most of them automatically 31 days after it posts the notice. Each row links to the FCC notice.

Before you rely on this

Not on the list? You may still be affected.

"Portions of" means some lines

Most filings cover parts of certain wire centers, not every address in a state. The FCC notice links to the carrier's application, which lists the exact areas.

Notices come before the cutoff

Carriers mail or email a discontinuance notice to the billing contact. If that person left, nobody sees it. Check your phone bill for the carrier name and every line number you pay for.

New filings every month

AT&T alone filed more than a dozen in 2026. A state that's clear today can show up next month. We update this list as the FCC posts new notices.

Not affected yet? Move anyway.

Even if your area hasn't been hit yet, it's still a good idea to move your copper voice lines to a modern, compliant solution, on your schedule instead of the carrier's. The process is simple, and it usually saves you money instead of costing you money.

Sources. Every national row is an FCC Wireline Competition Bureau public notice on a Section 214 technology-transition discontinuance (FCC EDOCS, Jan 2025 to Oct 5, 2026), read and checked Oct 15, 2026. Iowa town detail also uses Frontier/Verizon's Iowa copper retirement notice 2026-02-A-IA, with town and ZIP matching cross-checked against coppercountdown.com.

A filing means a carrier is allowed to stop that service in the listed area, not that every line goes dead that day. Carriers often move customers in waves after the date. ZIP codes are matched to states (and, in Iowa, to towns) and may not match your exact wire center. Applications filed but not yet noticed by the FCC are not included.
